   정복자의 사지(四肢)를 대지에서 대지로 펼치는

   저 그리스의 청동 거인과는 같지 않지만

   여기 우리의 바닷물에 씻긴 일몰의 대문 앞에

   횃불을 든 강대한 여인이 서 있으니

   그 불꽃은 투옥된 번갯불,

   그 이름은 추방자의 어머니

   횃불 든 그 손은 전 세계로 환영의 빛을 보내며

   부드러운 두 눈은 쌍둥이 도시에 의해 태어난

   공중에 다리를 걸친 항구를 향해 명령한다.

   “오랜 대지여, 너의 화려했던 과거를 간직하라!”

   그리고 조용한 입술로 울부짖는다

   “너의 지치고 가난한

   자유를 숨쉬기를 열망하는 사람들을

   너의 풍성한 해안가의 가련한 사람들을 나에게 보내다오

   폭풍우에 시달린,

   고향없는 자들을 나에게 보내다오

   황금의 문 곁에서 나의 램프를 들어올릴 터이니.”

   Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

   With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

   Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

   A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

   Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

   Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

   Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

   The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

   "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

   With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

   Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

   The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

   Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

   I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

   * 러시아의 기병대가 유대인 마을을 습격해 주민들을 무참히 학살하고 있었다. 그 중 엠마 라자루스(Emma Lazarus)는 필사적으로 마을에서 탈출해 미국행 선박에 몸을 실었다. 엠마는 미국에서 살며 시인 및 신문기자로 명성을 얻게 되었고, 러시아에서의 박해와 학살을 피해 미국으로 이주하는 유태인을 위해 1883년 시, “새로운 거상(The New Collosus)이란 소네트를 지었다. 후에 미국독립 100주년 축하의 시로 엠마의 시가 1903년부터 자유의 여신상 받침대에 새겨지게 되었다.

   Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
